First, you start with washing soda, borax, and a bar of soap.

And, a 5 gallon bucket (at least, that's what we use)!
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVpUaya0d6jBtNwWygGPcK21Ug28pNdsz5VHZrCB_Y2yeB7aTWtlXQG30UMMPcECTDOVTw1h2ga353nIWr8_jWevl7CgNRbQIdh0jyo0Qih4HmZZVrPbkl_osOW-_0vdUArnps1qXwXok/s320/Laundry+Detergent+005.jpg)
Start by grating the soap (and then, if you have a wonderful husband like I do, let him take over).
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWtUdKTmgu5Sy6Y6vbH5y3QxdGXlqpwUIo2R3ZyuwvDzWLvTV5qnGlyyUcRlIMLZQUQE7mNzvy5J4fNxS0M5F66pPyQYYMpI4NKMmveEInsAsqa2MMvGYn0xZh-GXNXt350W2g1BvVMFo/s320/Laundry+Detergent+006.jpg)
While he is grating the soap, put 4 cups of water on the stove and let it get hot, but not boiling (believe me, I let it boil one time and there were suds everywhere!!).

While that's getting hot, pour in 1/2 cup of borax into the 5 gallon bucket.

And, 1 cup of washing soda.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi53Hd4IGuLbgkASr64SnqJ__GbKJUjle6PEjADtKx_BofmNt9iQXgI8IRVO10uhhZK0zPvoxFFdYoxd6NJkLS3qwf-TKfxtox5Xz4g4mI1NuS3iWQiPdonU6rFSrVKas2iT_Ro9Sa4_Q/s320/Laundry+Detergent+015.jpg)
Meanwhile, John David has almost finished grating the soap.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFvXkhWMEOhzM5BYw5MBGJtxsic3jI3CYdRVGrD9aBoSSecSOI9V1dbf_8hoMthcUpquwGcn-SOJPiQKsC5I_xN4G55ibmyGWTpzfFRyzvomwdPf2qmYl51sb_ngluSB1TDw8IBZMfR3w/s320/Laundry+Detergent+016.jpg)
Add the soap one handful at a time to the hot water and stir til it dissolves.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgej5RGGKyWyxxtU_mX9rCXYaiyhyphenhyphenYi8Yc4GweXutnGt_hp5C_re6ikfDnYjLmAYDXsEpYMqW0qqyOqk07Z3w64v5n2QQJztXhZlFMUhg5obFYqaHuCb08W4ecc4HPvJkO3bTM6tfp5zK4/s320/Laundry+Detergent+019.jpg)
It gets nice and soapy.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUTtoxlf-uF4ity52vSRrhm_eqBS45mIUQ4qJlFh701Wb5VLeM9dmZBgt_Z8PfV-75uD3Hb_Bvqa61cPayXJ5-5H1Jyem34bek9GGm6QdLRGobhqXJ-bVMiY2gb1z6X6p_tXSP8CkZZ7w/s320/Laundry+Detergent+021.jpg)
This is what it looks like after all the soap has been added and dissolves.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1dMv9Or6dS5ERf93Vi4NBeZS2GuDQdtt6-xLUb3xWo-xLhEowy1bEqR6zpl0oiMnf7RlpKy4lVr_AtoGECzZJOl7rb-AMoP20ygXn92_bqG-mEKlCL4CSH8hKxsAkCPi82uvkBsexiEM/s320/Laundry+Detergent+022.jpg)
Add the soap to the washing soda and borax in the 5 gallon bucket.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp_8rpYeghUztccjr2qJv1cXgLzoDD2Rrp9zIGpt9zpO19pVBfRbJdWPPEchpAoRbbPVdDqSd1eo2t8Nhl7WOUZ1md2-J4J5-4HnCE66pJ5JvSEiHxs6XDgmFl0DR0Ufb368pgs6jDNl8/s320/Laundry+Detergent+024.jpg)
Now add 3 gallons of hot water straight from your faucet.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjujJviyeamQruNpW6d2uGmK7-kRBKEAfBG_AuwT7Gx03iiAO5lxQFkAWlF6o0thQVdhUfRZdmwoZLFTFlotjf-emrgw8VtcQqQ46qxJfhtkW_Zq0h9NHbPHG5EdrlOsXEZYM7Q8oHPAXA/s320/Laundry+Detergent+026.jpg)
Stir (with a big paint stirrer in our case).
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu8BaRiSE55nKbuPM_yYeg3OyvOUV6MGziWCcHx7kjhfkI1dby-SMK_nILzMgi_A9uhii9961Uyyy_dH67kuWahimCnNC1ST6fE999YFqxsqcqktdcIxP1vcAk9aPihaMoWI92djoJ2II/s320/Laundry+Detergent+027.jpg)
And, voila! You're done! It is 1 cup per load, just buy a cheap measuring cup or something. And, stir it a few times after you've made it (in the hours following) because it helps the detergent not clump.
On another note: we have vegetables in our garden! We have squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce (which we've already used in 3 meals this week) and will have peas, beans and peppers soon. Yay! I'll post pictures on Sunday because I forgot to take them today (oops).
Have a wonderful weekend!
